There are a lot of traditional festivals in Japan. Particularly, some are held in summer.I live in Kyoto. There are three big events that are Aoimatsuri on May,Gionmatsuri on July, and Jidaimatsuri on Octover. These are related to shrine, so many people come to every event. I join Gionmatsuri with my friends every year because it is held for four days and both sides of the street are lined with stalls on these day. Most of peple enjoy wearing Yukata. This is the biggest of the three festivals and it is famous for tourist. They come to see some Yamaboko. They are so high and also some people play instrument there, so it's wonderful!! everyone ought to enjoy this festival!
I recommend you go to Gionmatsuri in this summer.
